A sample itinerary – 24 self-drive days from Windhoek through the Namib and the Caprivi to Victoria Falls
Namibia is more than twice the size of Germany, yet home to only about half as many people as Hamburg. The Namib Desert that gave the country its name casts a spell over everyone with its endless expanses, its sky-high dunes and a relentless, searing sun. But the other landscapes are spectacular too: the wildly rugged central plateau, the endless savannahs of the east, the storm-battered coast in the west and the almost tropical green north. The Etosha National Park, with its wealth of wildlife and plants, is always a highlight. The route below shows what a self-drive journey from Windhoek through the south, to the coast, on to Etosha, into the Caprivi and further to Chobe National Park and Victoria Falls can look like – order, duration and accommodation are tailored entirely to your wishes.

After breakfast, drive to the edge of the Kalahari. The more scenic route heads first towards the airport and then along typical gravel roads, past the Karubeams mountains and the world-famous Bitterwasser gliding field. The guest farm sits on a working cattle and sheep farm in the middle of the Kalahari. Here you can enjoy the stillness of nature away from everyday life, the wide landscape with its view of the sand dunes between the camel-thorn trees, and let the day end around the campfire.

Today is spent relaxing on the guest farm. The Kalahari (also called the Kgalagadi) is a sand desert of mostly fine, powdery red sand. It stretches from South Africa's Northern Cape through Namibia and Botswana all the way into Angola and Zambia, covering more than 1.2 million square kilometres. Laid-out trails let you explore the surroundings on your own. In the late afternoon, join a guided sundowner drive across the farm.

Today's destination is Keetmanshoop, the administrative centre of southern Namibia. The first Europeans came here from South Africa's Cape; in 1866 the missionary Johann Schröder pitched a tent in the settlement. In the afternoon there is a chance to visit the Quiver Tree Forest and the Giant's Playground. The quiver tree (Aloe dichotoma) is a succulent that stores water in its trunk; the trees in the forest are about 200 to 300 years old. At the Giant's Playground you see a huge cluster of oversized boulders, with a circular trail leading through them.

Today the journey leads to the Fish River Lodge on the edge of the Fish River Canyon. The lodge lies in the private Canyon Nature Park and is the only lodge right on the canyon – the drop is only a few metres away. This gives you the best conditions to enjoy the breathtaking view, to experience magical sunrises and sunsets over the rugged landscape and to hike along the canyon. On the way it is worth stopping at the Naute Kristall distillery, where fine spirits are distilled from surplus fruit.

Today an adventurous guided day trip by 4x4 leads into the depths of the Fish River Canyon. Experienced guides point out the geological features along the way, revealing 500 million years of earth history – coarse limestone, gleaming quartzites, fine slate and dramatic fault lines. At up to 550 metres deep, the Fish River Canyon is considered the second-largest canyon in the world after the Grand Canyon; the gorge winds for around 160 kilometres through the rugged massif. Kudu, oryx, klipspringer and the shy mountain zebra are often spotted en route.

Tonight you camp at Klein-Aus Vista. The little town of Aus lies about 120 kilometres east of Lüderitz on the national road, one of the most scenic routes in southern Namibia. West of Aus the dune Namib begins, and here you can usually see a herd of wild horses. At the Garub waterhole a covered hide has been built where, sheltered from the sun, you can watch these remarkable desert-adapted animals up close. The pitches lie picturesquely in a small valley of the Aus mountains and offer perfect wilderness romance.

Today the route heads north to Sesriem, near the famous Sossusvlei. The track winds past farms towards the Tiras mountains, and the scenery grows ever more spectacular. The D707 is one of Namibia's most scenic roads, offering fantastic views of dunes, mountains and wide grassy plains; in the morning especially the landscape glows in intense colours. The campsite lies inside the Namib-Naukluft Park – a great advantage, since its guests may set off for Sossusvlei a full hour before sunrise, ahead of all other visitors.
~km—Basis—
We recommend rising early for the excursion to Sossusvlei – the play of shadow on the dunes at sunrise is simply magical. Drive through an imposing dune landscape to the famous Sossusvlei, a clay pan enclosed by dunes that in places rise over 300 metres. From the dunes you have an almost unreal view over the sea of sand, and a walk leads to Deadvlei with its long-dead trees. In the afternoon, visit the Sesriem Canyon, where the Tsauchab has cut up to 30 metres deep into the rock over millions of years.

In the morning, drive to Swakopmund on the Atlantic coast. On the way it is worth stopping in Solitaire, a cult little settlement on the edge of the Namib-Naukluft Park whose apple pie has been famous for years. The road continues through the Gaub and Kuiseb canyons, across the Tropic of Capricorn and through the endless gravel plains of the central Namib to Walvis Bay, known for its rich birdlife at the lagoon and the salt pans. The friendly town of Swakopmund bears the stamp of the colonial era and, in its architecture, recalls a small German town, nestled between coastal dunes, the cold Atlantic and the desert.

Today is free for optional activities. Between desert and ocean, Swakopmund is the ideal base: excursions into the Namib, for example to the dunes of Sandwich Harbour, are very popular, as are boat trips in the Walvis Bay lagoon, where pelicans, cormorants and seals accompany the boats and dolphins swim alongside. For the active there is quad biking, fat-bike tours and sandboarding. A stroll through the town centre belongs to the day too – among lovingly restored historic buildings, small souvenir shops and cosy street cafés invite you to linger.

After buying fresh provisions, follow the coast road north to Henties Bay – on the way, the wreck of the "Zeila" makes a good photo stop. The route then turns inland, past the striking Spitzkoppe, visible from far off in the midst of an endless, dry plain. The day's destination is a farmhouse with campsite in the Erongo mountains, where you either stay in the rustic farmhouse or camp among giant granite boulders. A network of trails and jeep tracks invites you to explore.

Today is spent in the Erongo mountains. The farm's landscape is spectacular and invites exploration: a network of farm roads and well-marked trails is there for hiking, birdwatching and photography, and the farm is home to a great variety of free-roaming game and birds, some found only in the Erongo. There is a chance to visit the Living Museum of the Ju/'Hoansi bushmen on the neighbouring farm, which gives a fascinating insight into the ancient hunter-gatherer culture of the San – you can learn trap-setting, the gathering of bush food, or how to make a bow and arrows.

Today the journey enters Etosha National Park, via Omaruru and Outjo to the Ombika Gate; the drive to camp already offers first chances for game viewing. Etosha is one of the most important conservation areas in southern Africa and has existed since 1907. Its central and eastern sections consist essentially of the silvery-white salt pans that made Etosha famous. Among mopane trees, grasslands and thorn bushes move more than 100 mammal species and around 340 kinds of bird. In the evening there is a chance to watch animals at the floodlit waterhole.

A full-day game drive in your own rental vehicle through Etosha National Park, working your way east. The special thing here: Etosha is superb to explore on your own – with no guide and at your own pace. As a self-driver on the hunt for sightings you can shape the day freely, be at the gate at sunrise or linger quietly at a waterhole. We recommend visiting several waterholes, which play a decisive role in the park's ecosystem and, in the heat of the day especially, are a favourite meeting point for many animals. In the late afternoon, drive to the bush camp on the eastern edge of the park.

The journey continues into the Kavango region to Rundu, to a lodge on the banks of the Okavango. On the way you cross the so-called "Red Line", a veterinary fence that runs right across Namibia; here the scenery changes abruptly from the typical uninhabited expanse to a more densely settled area with many small villages and tall deciduous trees lining the road. The lodge lies on the Okavango and offers relaxation and an African experience for nature lovers and birdwatchers. Afternoon at leisure or the chance of a boat trip on the river.

From the lodge's sun decks there is an idyllic view over the Okavango and the national park, home to elephant, buffalo, hippo and fish eagle. In the afternoon there is a chance of a game drive in your own vehicle into the Mahango Core Area: rich in flora and fauna, with sable and roan antelope, elephant, hippo and buffalo, and over 420 bird species for birdwatchers.

Today's destination is a lodge on the banks of the Kwando. The well-surfaced tar road runs east through the Bwabwata National Park and the "Caprivi Strip", which owes its name to the German chancellor Leo von Caprivi. The Caprivi is Namibia's most water-rich region, fed by the mighty Okavango, Kwando and Zambezi rivers, all of which rise in Angola. This abundance of water supports large populations of game, especially elephant; in several reserves such as Bwabwata and Mudumu the wildlife is protected, without border fences, so the animals move freely into neighbouring countries. The lodge's deck looks out over a peaceful hippo bathing spot.

Today is spent in the area around the lodge. Between the reed belts of the Zambezi region, the flowering water lilies and the abundance of wildlife there is a stillness that draws in every traveller. In the morning there is a chance of a guided boat trip or a game drive in your own vehicle into the Mudumu National Park, a broad expanse of dense savannah and bush. The entire eastern Caprivi, with over 430 species, is a paradise for birdwatchers. Crocodiles and hippos live in the rivers year-round, together with roan and sable antelope, lion, leopard and the rare, shy sitatunga. In the afternoon, a guided drive to the well-known Horseshoe Bend.

In the morning, cross the border into Botswana to the Chobe Safari Lodge, set right at the entrance to the town on the river. The famous Chobe National Park and the proximity of Victoria Falls have made Kasane a tourist hub. As the park is not fenced, you may well meet warthogs on the roads in the evening or an elephant herd out foraging. Near the town the borders of Botswana, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe all meet. Here the rental vehicle is handed back; the arrangement includes a game drive in Chobe National Park and a boat trip on the Chobe.

A full day at the world-famous Chobe National Park, founded in 1967 as Botswana's first national park and named after the Chobe River that forms its northern boundary. The Chobe riverfront guarantees elephants – it is said to have the densest concentration of elephants in Africa, with especially large herds during the dry season. Birdwatchers, too, love the riverfront, where most of the park's roughly 450 recorded bird species occur. Another natural spectacle is the annual zebra migration, when up to 25,000 zebras move from the Linyanti swamps to the Mababe Depression at the start of the rains.

In the morning you are collected and driven to the border; after the formalities, transfer to Victoria Falls. The town lies on the southern bank of the Zambezi near the falls that give it its name; on the Zambian northern bank lies Livingstone. The two are linked by a road and rail bridge spanning the 100-metre-deep gorge of the Zambezi. The town lives mainly from tourism, with an emphasis on colonial nostalgia and adventure travel, and owes its founding indirectly to the explorations of the Scottish missionary David Livingstone.

A full day at Victoria Falls, with the chance to see the falls and perhaps take a boat trip on the Zambezi. The Victoria Falls have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1989. David Livingstone, the first European to see them, described the waterfall as "the most beautiful thing he had ever seen in Africa" and named it in honour of Queen Victoria; the local Kololo call it Mosi-oa-Tunya, "the smoke that thunders". Over a width of 1,708 metres the Zambezi pours into a gorge 110 metres deep – making the Victoria Falls the widest continuous sheet of falling water on earth.
