For most visitors the animals are the main draw: in dozens of national parks and a growing number of private conservancies you can admire the legendary "Big Five". Ankunft in Nairobi. Nach Erledigung der Einreiseformalitäten werdet ihr vom Hotel abgeholt und zu eurer Unterkunft gebracht. Nairobi entwickelte sich aus einem Eisenbahncamp, das 1899 errichtet wurde, und ist heute ein bedeutendes Wirtschafts-, Handels- und Transportzentrum in Ostafrika. Arrival in Nairobi. After the entry formalities you are met by the hotel and taken to your accommodation. Nairobi grew out of a railway camp established in 1899 and is today a major economic, trading and transport centre in East Africa. The name "Nairobi" is a corruption of the Maasai expression Ewaso Nyarobi, "place of cool waters" – the name the Maasai gave the marshy stretch of land where they watered their herds.

Morgens Treffen mit eurem Fahrer-Guide und Fahrt am Lake Naivasha vorbei in den Lake Nakuru Nationalpark. Nach dem Mittagessen erste Pirschfahrten. Der kleine, artenreiche Lake Nakuru ist seit 1968 ein Nationalpark und ein Vogelparadies – über 500 Arten wurden hier verzeichnet. Zu den Hauptattraktionen zählen Flamingos, die sich zu Tausenden am Ufer versammeln, sowie Pelikane. Nakuru ist eine wichtige Bastion für beide gefährdeten Nashornarten; wahrscheinlich kann man nirgendwo in Ostafrika besser Breitmaulnashörner beobachten. Daneben bietet der Park exzellente Möglichkeiten, alle „Big Five“ sowie Giraffen, Wasserböcke und Paviane zu sehen.
In the morning you meet your driver-guide and drive, passing Lake Naivasha, into Lake Nakuru National Park. After lunch, the first game drives. The small, species-rich Lake Nakuru has been a national park since 1968 and is a birdwatcher's paradise – over 500 species have been recorded here. Among the main attractions are flamingos, which gather in their thousands along the shore, and pelicans. Nakuru is an important stronghold for both endangered rhino species; probably nowhere in East Africa are white rhino easier to see. The park also offers excellent chances of seeing all the "Big Five" as well as giraffe, waterbuck and baboon.

Hier herrscht offenes Grasland vor, das – wie das Maasai-Wort mara, „gesprenkelt“, nahelegt – von felsigen Bergen, Akazienbeständen und Galeriewald unterbrochen ist. Man sieht Raubtiere wie Leoparden und Geparde, Hyänen und Schakale, aber auch viele Elefanten, Büffel und andere Huftiere; zu den über 450 Vogelarten gehören Greifvögel, Strauße und Nashornvögel.
Drive via Narok and through the Sekenani Gate into the Masai Mara game reserve to your camp. After lunch, the first game drives in the Mara. The Masai Mara, Kenya's most famous and arguably finest reserve, covers 1,510 square kilometres and has existed since 1968. Open grassland predominates, broken – as the Maasai word mara, "spotted", suggests – by rocky hills, stands of acacia and gallery forest. You see predators such as leopard and cheetah, hyena and jackal, but also many elephant, buffalo and other ungulates; among the over 450 bird species are raptors, ostrich and hornbills.

Early in the morning there is the chance of a balloon flight over the Mara: at sunrise you glide silently over the savannah for about an hour and a quarter, followed by a sparkling-wine breakfast in the bush. After a short rest and lunch, further game drives in the afternoon. One of the most impressive natural spectacles on earth is the annual migration of up to 2.5 million ungulates through the Serengeti-Mara – Africa's largest intact migratory ecosystem. In a deafening column up to 40 kilometres long the animals cross the border between Tanzania and Kenya, dominated by up to two million wildebeest, accompanied by zebra and gazelle.

Falls genug Zeit bleibt, lohnt ein Besuch des Karen-Blixen-Hauses: Die Dänin Karen Blixen wurde durch ihr Buch „Jenseits von Afrika“ berühmt, in dem sie von ihrem Leben auf einer Kaffeeplantage in Kenia von 1914 bis 1932 erzählt. Ihr Farmhaus mit der breiten Veranda und dem roten Ziegeldach im Vorort Karen ist heute ein Museum; im friedlichen Garten hat man einen herrlichen Blick auf die von Blixen geliebten Ngong Hills.
After breakfast, drive back via Narok to Nairobi, where your guide takes you on a short city tour. If time allows, the Karen Blixen House is worth a visit: the Danish writer Karen Blixen became famous through her book "Out of Africa", in which she tells of her life on a coffee farm in Kenya from 1914 to 1932. Her farmhouse with its broad veranda and red-tiled roof in the Karen suburb is now a museum; from the peaceful garden there is a wonderful view of the Ngong Hills she loved.

In Voi werdet ihr abgeholt und ins Lumo-Schutzgebiet an der Grenze des Tsavo-West-Nationalparks gebracht. Nach dem Mittagessen erste Pirschfahrten. Das 450 Quadratkilometer große Schutzgebiet wurde 1993 aus Landstücken mehrerer Gemeinden eingerichtet und beherbergt Kaffernbüffel, Elefanten, Leoparden, Masai-Löwen und Masai-Giraffen, Zebras, Impalas und Dik-Diks sowie eine große Vielfalt an Vogelwelt.
In the morning, transfer to the station and a first-class intercity train to Voi – a comfortable, scenic stage. At Voi you are collected and taken into the Lumo conservancy on the edge of Tsavo West National Park. After lunch, the first game drives. The 450-square-kilometre conservancy was created in 1993 from land belonging to several communities and is home to Cape buffalo, elephant, leopard, Masai lion and Masai giraffe, zebra, impala and dik-dik, as well as a great variety of birdlife.

Morgens und nachmittags Pirschfahrten im Lumo-Schutzgebiet. Zwischen den beiden Ausfahrten bleibt Zeit, im Camp die Ruhe zu genießen und von der Terrasse aus die vorbeiziehende Tierwelt zu beobachten. Der Name des Gebietes verweist auf den hier ansässigen Taita-Klan Lumo. Mit etwas Glück sieht man neben den großen Herden auch Wasserböcke, Thomson-Gazellen, wenige Kudus und viele der über den Tag verteilt aktiven Raubtiere.
Morning and afternoon game drives in the Lumo conservancy. Between the two outings there is time to enjoy the calm of the camp and to watch the passing wildlife from the terrace. The area's name refers to the local Taita clan Lumo. With a little luck, alongside the larger herds you see waterbuck, Thomson's gazelle, a few kudu and many of the predators active throughout the day.

Morgens letzte Safari, danach Rücktransfer nach Voi und Weiterfahrt mit dem Intercity-Zug nach Mombasa. Am Bahnhof werdet ihr abgeholt und zur Nordküste in euer Strandhotel gebracht – erste Gelegenheit für einen Strandbesuch. Kenias zweitgrößte Stadt und wichtiger Hafen liegt auf einer kleinen Insel, die über Brücken im Norden und Westen und die Likoni-Fähre im Süden mit dem Festland verbunden ist.
In the morning a final safari, then transfer back to Voi and onward by intercity train to Mombasa. At the station you are collected and taken to your beach hotel on the north coast – a first chance for the beach. Kenya's second city and important port lies on a small island, linked to the mainland by bridges to the north and west and the Likoni ferry to the south.

A two-day stay in Mombasa to relax on the beach and for excursions into the city. Well worth seeing is the maze of narrow lanes in the Old Town, whose houses were built mostly between 1870 and 1930 and combine British colonial style with Indian ornamentation. Fort Jesus was built in 1593 by an Italian master builder for Portugal to protect the harbour; for three centuries the most important strategic building on the Swahili coast, it is today the region's most popular museum. We recommend arranging a driver at reception to accompany you into the city, to the Old Town and to the fort.
